Austin’s first suburb, still built for walking
Hyde Park was laid out in 1891 by Monroe Shipe, who ran a streetcar line down Speedway to sell lots in what was then countryside. That origin is why the neighborhood still works the way it does: a tight grid, deep porches, and a scale where errands happen on foot. Shipe Park carries his name, and the Elisabet Ney Museum — the sculptor’s limestone studio, open to the public since 1911 — sits a few blocks over on Avenue H.
