Lash Lift, Step by Step: The Chemistry & What a Session Is Really Like

A lash lift is the treatment for anyone who looks in the mirror and thinks my lashes are fine — they just point straight down. It doesn’t add a thing; it curls and lifts the lashes you already have, so they suddenly read longer, darker, and more open. Here’s exactly how it works, and what to expect minute by minute.
The chemistry: it’s a perm for your lashes
Your lashes are made of keratin, held in shape by disulfide bonds. A lift works by rearranging those bonds in two steps:
- The lifting solution softens and breaks the disulfide bonds, making each lash pliable enough to take a new shape. (In a “keratin” lift this step is often gentler and paired with conditioning.)
- Your lashes are molded over a silicone shield into the curl you want.
- The setting solution re-forms the disulfide bonds — locking the lashes in their new lifted shape.
That’s the whole trick: soften, reshape, re-set. An optional tint darkens the lashes afterward for a mascara-like finish, and a keratin or nourishing coat conditions them to close.
Choosing your curl
The shield size decides how dramatic the lift is — and it’s matched to your lash length and the look you want:

Step by step: what actually happens
A session runs about 45–60 minutes, and you’re comfortable with your eyes closed the whole time:
- Consult & cleanse — we talk through the curl you want and thoroughly clean the lashes.
- Shield placement — your lower lashes are gently taped away; the upper lashes are lifted up onto the silicone shield with a temporary gel.
- Lift — the lifting solution is applied to the mid-lengths of the lashes and processed for a timed window (roughly 8–12 minutes). Timing is everything here.
- Set — the setting solution goes on for a similar window to lock the new curl.
- Tint (optional) — a lash-safe dye adds depth and that no-mascara darkness.
- Nourish & reveal — a keratin/conditioning coat, then the shield and product come off and your lashes are brushed into their new lift.
Aftercare: the first 24–48 hours matter most
The bonds are still settling right after, so for the first 24–48 hours: keep lashes dry, avoid steam, saunas, and hot showers, skip mascara and rubbing, and try not to sleep with your face smashed into the pillow. After that, it’s genuinely low-maintenance — just brush them and cleanse gently.
Is it safe? Keep it professional
Done by a trained artist, a lash lift is gentle. The risks come from over-processing (solutions left on too long, which leaves lashes dry or frizzy) and from DIY kits with no timing control. A patch test is sensible if you have sensitive eyes or skin, solutions stay off the skin and out of the eye, and if you’re pregnant it’s worth checking with your doctor first. Your lashes still shed and regrow on their normal growth cycle underneath the lift.
Lift or extensions?
If you want the lowest-maintenance, most-natural result, a lift wins; if you want length and volume added, extensions are the move. Neither is “better” — they’re different tools for different looks, and plenty of clients alternate.
