Lash Lift & Tint in Austin: Cost, Timing & Tint Safety

A lash lift and tint at Eye Charm in Hyde Park, Austin costs $135 and is a 70-minute appointment: your own lashes are curled from the base, then tinted darker. The lift lasts about 6 to 8 weeks; the tint stays dark for about 3 to 4 weeks. A lift alone is $115, a tint alone is $30, and nothing is glued to your lashes.

The short version

A lash lift reshapes your natural lashes over a silicone shield so they curve up instead of out. A lash tint is a professional dye that darkens them. Together they give you a mascara-like look for weeks with no fills and no daily routine. The only real rules are: keep them dry for 24–48 hours, choose an artist who times the lift to your lash strength, and never let anyone put hair dye near your eyes.

How much is a lash lift and tint in Austin?

At Eye Charm the Lash Lift + Tint is $135, and every price is public on our price list. Booked separately the services are $115 and $30, so the combination saves ten dollars and one trip. The price is the same whichever of our two artists you book.

How long does a lash lift and tint last?

The lift lasts about 6 to 8 weeks, and it fades gently rather than all at once. Each lash is on its own growth cycle, so as lifted lashes shed, new straight ones grow in beside them and the overall curl softens.

The tint follows its own clock. BABTAC, the UK professional body for beauty therapists, describes lash tint as lasting “several weeks” and warns that chlorinated pool water “will lighten the color considerably.” So if you spend the Austin summer in a chlorinated pool, expect the color to soften faster. In our studio, tint typically stays visibly dark for about 3 to 4 weeks, so it fades before the curl does. If you want the color to last the whole lift, book a tint on its own ($30) around the halfway point.

Is lash tinting safe?

Lash tint carries real, documented risks. They are lowest when a trained professional uses a lash-specific product, keeps it off the eye, and checks for sensitivity first. The warnings you may have read are real, and they are specific:

• Hair dye is not lash tint. The FDA requires coal-tar hair dye labels to say the product “must not be used for dyeing the eyelashes or eyebrows; to do so may cause blindness.” Box hair dye has no place near your eyes, and the one FDA-listed lash color additive is for professional use only.
• The FDA regulates what can color lashes. Its eye cosmetic safety page states that “permanent eyelash and eyebrow tints and dyes have been known to cause serious eye injuries, including blindness,” and that the FDA “has provided for the safe use of silver nitrate as a color additive, in professional-use only cosmetics, to color eyebrows and eyelashes.” The rule behind that, 21 CFR 73.2550, caps silver nitrate at 4 percent, says application is not intended to exceed one minute and should be followed by immediate removal, and says these products are applied by a professional and not sold to consumers.
• Some tints are dye chemistry close to hair dye. A 2019 review in Medical Hypothesis, Discovery and Innovation in Ophthalmology (Masud et al.) reports that lash tints most commonly contain 2-chloro-p-phenylenediamine. The same review calls PPD (p-phenylenediamine) “the most common sensitizer in hair dyes,” and notes that dyes have been linked to contact dermatitis and swollen lids.
• Reactions can be new. The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that “it is possible to have a reaction even if you have tolerated a treatment without issue in the past.”

What that means for you: ask your artist which tint they use, ask for a patch test (BABTAC says to expect one at least 24 hours before tinting near the eye), and tell them if you’ve ever reacted to hair dye. If you have a reaction after a tint, the AAO’s advice is to contact your health care provider promptly, then report it to the FDA. Don’t wait it out.

What happens at the appointment?

You lie back with your eyes closed for almost all of it, and the whole visit is booked at about 70 minutes.

1. Consultation. We look at your natural lash length and strength and choose the shield size. The shield decides the curl; stronger isn’t always better, and the wrong one gives an over-crimped look.
2. Lift. Lashes are set onto the silicone shield and the lifting solution softens them so they take the new shape. Timing is matched to your lash strength, which is the step where experience matters most.
3. Set, then tint. The setting solution locks the curl in, the tint goes on, and a keratin conditioning step finishes the lashes before the shield comes off.

Who should wait or skip it?

A lift and tint suits people with some natural lash length. Ask first if:

• Your eyes are irritated or infected right now, or you’ve had recent eye surgery. We’ll ask you to postpone until your eyes have healed, and after surgery until your doctor clears you.
• You’ve reacted to hair dye, a brow tint or a lash tint before. Tell us before we start; a lift without tint is still an option.
• You’re pregnant. It’s worth checking with your doctor first.
• You want extensions soon. Let the lift grow out first, about 6 to 8 weeks, before a new set of eyelash extensions; extensions need your lashes in their natural shape.

What’s the aftercare?

For the first 24–48 hours, keep your lashes dry, skip steam, saunas and mascara, and try not to sleep face-down. After that there’s nothing to maintain: no fills, no special cleanser; just brush them and cleanse gently. If you do wear mascara over a lifted set, a non-waterproof formula helps keep the lift looking its best. Expect the tint to soften faster if you’re in chlorinated water often.
