Eyelash Extension Aftercare: How to Make Your Lashes Last
May 22, 2026 · By Anastasiia
Good aftercare is the single biggest factor in how long your lash extensions last. The rules are simple: keep them clean and dry for the first few hours, cleanse daily with a lash-safe foaming wash, brush them gently each morning, and avoid oil-based products and rubbing. Do that, and you’ll get the full growth cycle out of every set.
The first 24–48 hours
Right after your appointment, the adhesive is still curing. For the first few hours, keep your lashes dry and avoid steam, sweat, and heat. After that, you can return to normal — but the habits below are what protect your investment long term.
Your daily lash routine
- Cleanse every day. Use a lash-safe foaming cleanser and a soft brush to remove oil, makeup, and debris from the lash line. Clean lashes retain better and stay healthier — skipping this is the #1 reason sets shed early.
- Brush them out. A quick stroke with a clean spoolie each morning keeps fans separated and neat.
- Avoid oil. Oil breaks down lash adhesive. Check that cleansers, makeup removers, and skincare near your eyes are oil-free.
- Don’t rub or pick. Tugging pulls out extensions — and your natural lashes with them.
What shortens retention
- Sleeping face-down (try a back or side position)
- Waterproof mascara and oil-based removers
- Long, steamy showers and saunas
- Rubbing your eyes or picking at extensions
How often to get fills
Because you naturally shed lashes every day, book a fill every 14–28 days to replace what has cycled out. Wait too long and it becomes a new full set rather than a fill.
