Handmade vs Pre-Made Volume Fans: Which Is Better?

May 30, 2026 · By Anastasiia

Handmade volume fans are better than pre-made ones — they’re lighter, tailored to each natural lash, and gentler on lash health and retention. A pre-made fan is mass-produced in a factory with a glued base, so it’s bulkier and one-size-fits-all. At Eye Charm Artistry, we make every volume fan by hand, never pre-made, so each fan fits the lash it sits on.

What’s the difference?

A handmade fan is crafted by your artist at the moment of application: she fans ultra-fine extensions and bonds them to a single isolated natural lash, sizing the fan to that lash. A pre-made fan comes already assembled with a hardened glue base at the bottom — fast to apply, but heavier and identical from lash to lash.

Why lighter fans matter

A volume fan should never outweigh the natural lash holding it. Because handmade fans are glue-free at the base and sized to each lash, they keep the set light — which protects your natural lashes and helps the set last the full growth cycle. Heavier pre-made fans put more load on each lash, which can stress it and shorten retention. See how long extensions last for what good retention looks like, and do extensions damage natural lashes for why weight matters.

Good to know

Common questions

Are handmade volume fans better than pre-made fans?

Yes — handmade fans are lighter, tailored to each natural lash, and have better retention than mass-produced pre-made fans. At Eye Charm Artistry in Austin we make every fan by hand, never pre-made.

What's wrong with pre-made volume fans?

Pre-made fans are bonded with extra adhesive and come in fixed sizes, so they're heavier and harder to match to your natural lash — which can shorten retention. Handmade fans avoid that bulk.

How can I tell if a studio uses handmade fans?

Ask directly — handmade studios build each fan at the chair during your appointment. At Eye Charm Artistry, handmade volume fans are standard on every volume and hybrid set.
